Grant Will Help Pay For Health Education

From Staff And Wire Reports

A consortium of North Idaho hospitals and health clinics has secured a three-year grant to help schools deliver health education and services to students.

The $559,000 grant is from the federal Office of Rural Health and will be split among North Idaho’s school districts based on past health-related expenses, student population and poverty data.

School nurses from the various districts will put together a menu of options for how the grant money can be used, said Gene Tomt, chief executive officer of Bonner County Hospital.

Tomt said the hospital consortium applied for the grant because the limited funding available to school districts often means that health education and training “don’t always take the front burner.”

The money can’t be used to add staff, but it can be used to otherwise help deliver medical services at school or for health education materials.

The grant amount will be allocated over three years. Here’s what the schools will receive in the first year: Coeur d’Alene School District, $10,800; Lakeland School District, $20,135; Post Falls School District, $19,812; Kootenai Joint School District, $2,500; Benewah County schools, $4,760; Shoshone County schools, $12,035; Bonner County School District, $20,817; and Boundary County School District, $15,141. , DataTimes
