Cougs Cap Recruiting Effort With Prize Junior-College Catch

Associated Press

Running back Kevin Brown, a highly recruited player out of San Francisco City College, signed a letter of intent to play for Washington State University, coach Mike Price said Thursday.

Brown - a 6-foot-2, 215-pound tailback who led California junior college runners with 1,762 total yards last season - was the Cougars’ top prospect, Price said.

“You would have to say Kevin is our number one recruit,” Price said. “He is awesome, a real game-breaker.”

Brown, who scored 20 rushing touchdowns, averaged 8 yards per carry and averaged 176.2 yards per game, is expected to compete for the position left vacant with the departure of Michael Black.

Brown was recruited by Washington, among others.

Price also announced the signing of another California junior-college transfer, 6-3, 200-pound defensive end Saeed Abdul-Malik from Pasadena Junior College.

The addition of the two transfers to those signing letters on Wednesday brings the 1998 recruiting class to 23.
