EV Stops Archrival Wv Cold
Border League girls
If East Valley girls basketball coach Darsi Frazier could bottle the formula that has worked so well against rival West Valley, she’d be a happy woman.
The Knights took advantage of woeful Eagles shooting for a 49-25 victory and sweep of the season series.
Yet EV, 6-11 overall and 5-8 in league, remains a game and a half behind the Eagles (9-9, 7-7) in the Border League.
“I have no idea,” said Frazier when asked why the Knights play so well against WV. “If I knew, I’d be a millionaire.”
She’d settle on her players realizing they could have been just as successful against Idaho schools as have the Eagles.
“We’re still learning how to win,” said Frazier. “If they’d realize they can play like this and like they do in practice, we’d be a contender.”
The Knights pressured the perimeter, forcing WV’s 3-point shooters into a night of futility.
The outside shooters had only six baskets in the game and missed all 21 of their 3-point attempts.
A basket by Gabby McClintock with 1:51 remaining in the first half, cutting EV’s lead to 18-16, was the last field goal the Eagles would get until 3:24 remained in the game.
“We kind of got them frustrated,” said Frazier. “When they’re on they can be tough.”
The Knights scored three baskets in the last minute of the first quarter for an 11-7 lead. They never trailed after that.
Two of those scores were by reserve Rachelle Schultz, who had 10 points and six rebounds for the winners.
Knights scoring leader Rebecca Triplett scored the last five points of the second quarter to make it 23-16.
WV went cold in the second half, missing its first 23 shots.
Ahead 29-19 midway through the third quarter, EV scored 14 straight points. Triplett, who finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, scored eight points in the run.
Compounding Eagles problems was the fact that scoring leader McClintock, who scored a dozen points, fouled out with 5:39 remaining in the game.
But even she wouldn’t have been enough.
“It was a little bit of us playing well and them having an off night,” said Frazier.
