Grover Named District 1 Assistant Fire Chief

Battalion Chief Mark Grover has been named assistant fire chief of Valley Fire District 1.

Grover, a 24-year employee of the fire district, will take over on March 1, when current assistant chief Karl Bold retires. Grover will be responsible for the daily operations of the fire district.

Grover, 47, said he’s interested in finding the best ways for the district to deal with a growing population and increasing traffic problems.

“The biggest thing we’re reacting to is the growth,” he said. “We’re seeing real problems with gridlock.”

He hopes to help create more community involvement in disaster preparedness, perhaps with disaster training programs for civilians.

He would like to expand safety training for citizens. Currently, the fire district offers CPR training. More and different classes could be added, he said.

Nationwide, Grover said, fire departments are becoming more customer-oriented. They’re also expanding their services and providing more home treatment and medical education.

Grover said he’s interested in hearing what Valley residents want from their fire district.

Grover has worked at Valley Fire District 1 as a firefighter, paramedic, dispatcher, station lieutenant, station captain and battalion chief. He also has been a senior EMT instructor, computer instructor, CPR and advanced first aid instructor.

He has lived in Spokane for 44 years. He is married and has two teenaged children.
