Husky Sets Kibbie Dome Record
JaWarren Hooker from the University of Washington had the highlight performance during Friday’s first day of the University of Idaho Indoor Scoring Meet in Moscow.
Hooker broke the 11-year-old Kibbie Dome 60-meter dash record with his 6.69-second effort. He bettered the previous record of 6.74 set in 1987 by Lee Gordon from the Oregon International Track Club.
Jeannine Korus had the top effort of the night for Idaho when she edged Washington’s Monique Glass to win the 400 meters. Both were timed in 56.63 seconds.
Competition for the eight teams resumes today at 9 a.m.
CWU lands football recruits
Three more area high school athletes have signed national letters of intent to play football for Central Washington.
They are Courtney Brown, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound linebacker, and Chris Sullivan, a 5-11, 260-pound offensive lineman, both from Central Valley; and East Valley’s Ryan Stengle, a 6-3, 225-pound offensive lineman.
Cougars rained out
Washington State’s baseball game against the University of Houston, to be played in San Diego, was rained out Friday. The teams will play this morning before WSU plays San Diego State.
Welliver wins
Dewey Welliver, a 139-pounder from the Lilac City Boxing Club of Spokane, scored a 5-0 decision over Michael Dargon of Philadelphia in the National Silver Gloves Tournament Friday in Kansas City.
Welliver, who knocked down Dargon in the first round en route to the victory, will meet Angus Givins from Washington, D.C., tonight in the finals.
Nalo Leal of Lilac City lost 5-0 to Eric Gonzales from Phoenix at 125.
Braves win in overtime
Patrick Heinz scored in overtime to give the Spokane Braves a 4-3 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League win in Grand Forks on Friday night.
Cam Werfelman had three assists for Spokane, which has five games left before the playoffs.
