Sailor Saves Boy From House Fire

Associated Press

A sailor stationed aboard the USS Kitty Hawk was credited Monday with saving a 7-year-old boy from a house fire.

Airman Apprentice Barry Thomas, 18, was visiting a friend at a home in downtown Bremerton when he heard screams coming from a bedroom early Monday morning.

Thomas burst into the bedroom, grabbed the boy and carried him out as flames engulfed the room.

The boy was airlifted to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center with burns and cuts. Thomas was taken to the naval hospital in Bremerton with second-degree burns and cuts.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Thomas is a California native stationed aboard the Kitty Hawk. The ship is in drydock at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard through April for maintenance.
