Man Sentenced For Attacking Father
A Spokane man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of wounding his father with a handgun.
David Sevier II, 30, was convicted of first-degree assault during a jury trial last month.
Sevier was arrested after the June 5, 1996, shooting of David A. Sevier, 57.
The elder Sevier, a Hillyard minister, recovered from the wound and testified during the trial. He told jurors he didn’t know why his son took out the gun and fired once, wounding him in the chest.
His son testified that he hadn’t fired the gun, or that if he had, “he didn’t remember shooting his father,” said Deputy Prosecutor Mark Lindsey.
Sevier’s defense attorney argued that Sevier was not guilty of assault because of diminished mental capacity.
Superior Court Judge Robert Austin asked Sevier during sentencing if he had fired the gun. When Sevier said he hadn’t, Austin felt he had no choice but to impose the prison sentence.
Sevier has no other criminal record, Lindsey said.
