Shadle Seals District 8 Spot
GSL girls basketball
With a playoff berth on the line, Shadle Park played like it does in practice. University left its game at practice.
The Highlanders clinched a spot in the Greater Spokane League girls basketball District 8 tournament by blitzing the Titans 74-53 at U-Hi on Friday night.
“We play that good in practice every week,” Shadle Park senior leader Sara Harchuck said. “We just finally did it in a game. We’re going to play that way the rest of the way.”
With two games left, the five-team battle for the final three playoff games is sorting out. Lewis and Clark and Shadle Park are in. U-Hi, Rogers and Gonzaga Prep are in a battle for the last spot, which won’t be decided until Prep plays Rogers in the last game next Thursday.
“I have no idea how we could come out so flat,” University coach Bob Finn said. “They came out in man (defense), I thought they would come out in a 2-3 (zone). They were in our face, we couldn’t do anything. Their posts just killed us.
”(At halftime) we tried to make a couple of adjustments on offense and we couldn’t even get into it… . They looked like they wanted it. They played a great game.”
The Titans (6-12 overall, 6-10 GSL) beat the Highlanders (10-8, 8-8) by 15 at Shadle Park a month ago.
“That’s the (team) I’ve been waiting to see all season,” Shadle Park coach Linda Sheridan said. “We have a talented team… . I told them to quit worrying about winning and losing and go have fun.”
The fun started in the third quarter when Harchuck had eight of her game-high 15 points and the Highlanders blitzed the Titans 25-4 to open a 57-32 lead.
“We were really disciplined tonight,” said Harchuck, who hit 7 of 11 shots. “We came in with the mentality we had to win this game. If we get off to a good start, we dictate the game … they have to respond to us.”
With reserve Rochelle Stockman scoring eight of her 10, the Highlanders led most of the first half. Another reserve kept U-Hi in the game as Katie Oglesbee had nine of her 11, seven in the second quarter.
The game turned just before the half. U-Hi pulled within one with 15 seconds left and the Highlanders turned the ball over. The Titans used a 20-second timeout to try to grab the lead but put up an airball that Shadle Park turned into a fastbreak three-point play by Brooke Olzendam for a 32-28 lead.
Harchuck started the second half with two quick baskets as the Highlanders started with a 9-2 run for an 11-point lead. Then a 12-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back three-point plays by Amy Ridings and Michelle Etter, broke the game open.
Point guard Aubrie Caldwell added 12 points and Etter had 10 to give Shadle Park, a team with no player averaging in double figures, four players in double figures. Katie Schurra and Olzendam added nine points apiece.
