Suspects Arrested In Attempt To Assassinate Shevardnadze

Compiled From Wire Services

Investigators have arrested four or five suspects in an assassination attempt on Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze and are conducting a nationwide manhunt for two others, authorities said Sunday.

Shevardnadze went on Georgian television to charge that last week’s attempt on his life was carried out by followers of former President Zviad Gamsakhurdia.

Earlier, Georgian television had announced the first arrests in the case, which came six days after a group of 10 to 15 assailants attacked Shevardnadze’s motorcade with automatic weapons and grenades, killing two people but leaving the president unharmed.
