Third-seeded Gusavo Kuerten of Brazil eliminated Jan-Michael Gambill of Colbert 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the third round of the Kroger St. Jude tennis tournament in Memphis, Tenn.

Her confidence and her game still not there, Steffi Graf lost to Belgium’s Sabine Appelmans 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at Hanover, Germany, in the quarterfinals of the $450,000 Faber Grand Prix. It was her second singles match since knee surgery eight months ago.
