Seahawks Gain, Lose

With Winston Moss’ future uncertain after he fractured his neck in a game in December, the Seattle Seahawks have landed Darrin Smith to replace him at outside linebacker.

Smith, 27, said he has agreed to a four-year contract that is expected to be worth more than $11 million when it is completed.

Smith, who played at University of Miami under Seahawks coach Dennis Erickson, played with Philadelphia last season after being in Dallas for four years.

The Seahawks were looking for a new starting center Thursday after Kevin Mawae, a four-year veteran with Seattle, decided to leave for the New York Jets, signing a five-year contract with coach Bill Parcells’ team.

Defensive end Gabe Wilkins became the second defensive starter in two days to leave the Green Bay Packers, signing with the San Francisco 49ers.

The 49ers, who lost to the Packers in the NFC championship game, also signed tight end Irv Smith from New Orleans to replace Brent Jones.

Guard Joe Patton re-signed with the Washington Redskins, turning down a more lucrative offer from San Francisco.

The National Football League Players Association filed a grievance against the Washington Redskins, alleging the team violated the league’s labor agreement by naming defensive tackle Sean Gilbert their franchise player.

Although John Elway has not officially announced whether he will return for another year with the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos, the quarterback will undergo surgery on his right shoulder Monday.

Former Green Bay Packers punter Craig Hentrich signed a multiyear contract with the Tennessee Oilers.

The Minnesota Vikings agreed to a three-year contract with kicker Gary Anderson, who holds the NFL career record for field goals.
