Idaho Logs Could Be Processed In Washington
A committee of the Idaho Legislature has voted introduction of legislation that would allow Boise Cascade Corp. to export logs to the state of Washington for processing.
Only Rep. Jim Stoicheff, D-Sandpoint, objected.
Other members of the House Ways and Means Committee voted Friday to introduce a bill from a Boise Cascade lobbyist allowing an exception to the law requiring most logs from state lands to be processed in the state.
The law was enacted in 1989 to protect the jobs of Idaho sawmill workers. It says 95 percent of the logs harvested from state lands must be offered to “qualified bidders” in the state. The same amount of timber must be processed in Idaho.
The measure will be referred to the Resources and Conservation Committee.
