Student Center Expansion Sought At Scc
Spokane Community College students in the future may register for classes, cash checks and buy books in the same building under a proposal unveiled this week.
Greg Plummer, director of facilities for the Community Colleges of Spokane, said the district is considering an estimated $6 million expansion of the Lair Student Center at SCC.
The plan, if approved by the CCS board of trustees, would remodel 40,000 square feet and increase the size of Lair by 24 percent to a total of 104,000 square feet.
Lair currently houses a bookstore, game room, cafeteria, career center, bowling alley, student government offices, meeting rooms and theater. But class registration, counseling and other student services are done in the SCC administration building. Financial aid checks must be cashed off campus.
The expansion would consolidate student services in Lair. A small bank may open in the center.
The expansion would be financed primarily from vending machines, bookstore and food service sales and other campus sources, Plummer said.
The board will vote in March whether to proceed with the project.
