Blazers Hold Off Bulls
Arvydas Sabonis scored 21 points and matched a career-high with 20 rebounds as the Portland Trail Blazers blew a 15-point lead before recovering to stun the Chicago Bulls 106-101 Wednesday night in Chicago.
Damon Stoudamire, in his fifth game with Portland, had 24 points and 11 assists as the Blazers ended the Bulls’ eight-game winning streak. Isiah Rider added 22 points for Portland.
The loss was just the third in 29 home games for the Bulls this season.
Michael Jordan scored 33 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter to spark the Bulls’ furious comeback. But he made only 9 of 26 shots from the field.
Shaquille O’Neal scored 24 points, and Eddie Jones and Derek Fisher had 20 apiece as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers 96-89 in Indianapolis.
Alan Henderson continued to take advantage of his new starting role, scoring 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting as the Atlanta Hawks routed the Denver Nuggets 112-88 at Denver.
Bo Outlaw scored a career-high 29 points as the Orlando Magic defeated the Dallas Mavericks 100-79 at Orlando, Fla.
Schrempf due back
Seattle SuperSonics forward Detlef Schrempf is listed as “probable” for Friday’s game against the Atlanta Hawks after missing the past four games with a throat injury.
Schrempf, 35, has been sidelined with swelling in his throat, the result of an injury he suffered during a Feb. 15 practice.
A 13-year veteran and three-time All-Star, Schrempf will be evaluated after today’s practice, the team said.
Van Exel facing surgery
All-Star point guard Nick Van Exel of the Los Angeles Lakers will undergo diagnostic arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today. He is expected to be out three to four weeks.
The Cleveland Cavaliers placed forward Danny Ferry on the injured list with an inflamed right knee.
Jazz re-sign Cunningham
The Utah Jazz have signed center William Cunningham to a second 10-day contract.
The New York Knicks signed veteran free agent center Herb Williams, bringing back one of the franchise’s most popular players six days after he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.
