Grant Helps UI Hook Up To Internet2
The University of Idaho announced Friday it is one of 29 universities to receive a $350,000 National Science Foundation grant for Internet connections.
The grant will enable it to connect to the Backbone Network Service and allow UI scientists and engineers to share powerful computing information resources with other colleges across the country.
The backbone is crucial to President Clinton’s Next Generation Internet, which will let institutions connect to Internet2, a faster and more advanced Internet.
“The university’s membership in the Internet2 project opens new doors for Idaho researchers,” said Glenn Wilde, director of UI Information Resources and Technology.
The NGI Initiative, announced by Clinton and Vice President Al Gore in 1996, is the foundation for the more powerful networks of the 21st century.
For universities, such a large capacity network will allow scientists to collect and share large amounts of data and operate complex equipment from remote sites.
