Canada’s Jr. Hockey Run Ends; U.S. Loses
Maksim Afinogenov scored with 39 seconds left in overtime as Russia ended Canada’s reign as World Junior hockey champions with a 2-1 quarterfinal win on Wednesday.
Canada had won five consecutive titles in the 19-years-and-under age group and captured seven of the last eight championships.
In the other quarterfinals, the Czech Republic defeated the United States 4-1; Switzerland beat Sweden on penalty shots after a 1-1 tie; and Finland crushed Kazakstan 14-1.
In Friday’s semifinals, Finland plays Switzerland while Russia meets the Czech Republic.
