Bulldogs Race Past Warriors

The Gonzaga University Bulldogs went on a 27-5 first-half run and never looked back, easily defeating the Western Baptist Warriors 89-47 in non-league women’s basketball Friday night in Martin Centre.

Staci Andrews and Melanie Tipps combined for 31 points and 15 rebounds for Gonzaga (8-3) as the Bulldogs scored 39 points off Western Baptist turnovers. Gonzaga also dominated the offensive glass with 30 second chance points to just 7 for Western Baptist.

Western Baptist (5-8) managed just 17 shots for the game.

Becky Huddle just couldn’t let North Idaho go down to defeat against CC Spokane in the Big Bend Crossover Tournament in Moses Lake.

Huddle’s layup with 2 seconds left sent the game into overtime. Then with 2 seconds remaining, Huddle made another layup to send it to the second overtime. With 1 second remaining, Huddle again drove the lane to give the Cardinals a 63-62 win.

North Idaho (11-2) remained perfect against CC Spokane (11-4) for the season, defeating the Sasquatch for the third time.

Huddle scored 19 points. Erin Dowhy led NIC with 23.

The Sasquatch’s rebounding kept them in the game despite shooting a paltry 23 percent from the field; Spokane set a school record with 68 rebounds.

Today, North Idaho will play the host Vikings and Spokane will square off against Okanogan.

Men’s basketball

Treasure Valley CC (9-5) held on to defeat CC Spokane 63-58 after seeing a good chunk of its halftime lead vanish.

The Sasquatch (8-5) trailed by 16 at intermission and rallied to within five, but could get no closer at the Treasure Valley Crossover Tournament in Ontario, Ore.

The Chukars were lead by LaMark Judkins’ 22 points. Modesto Spencer led CCS with 15.

Eastern Washington opens the Big Sky Conference season tonight at 7 at Reese Court against defending champion Northern Arizona. It was erroneously reported that the two teams would play Friday.

Junior hockey

Osoyoos scored a 5-2 win over the Spokane Braves in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League matchup in Wenatchee. Osoyoos had five different scorers. Both Braves goals came off assists by Keith Tobiason.
