Portland State Topples Northridge
Jason Hartman scored a career high 33 points as host Portland State defeated Cal State Northridge 83-75 Friday in a Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.
The Vikings broke a four-game losing streak and shot a school-record 26 of 40 (.650) on field goals.
The Vikings, ahead 36-35 at halftime, began building their lead with 15 minutes left in the second half.
Portland was ahead 48-43 when Hartman scored six consecutive points, boosting the Vikings to 54-43.
The Matadors (4-7, 0-1) rallied with a 20-7 run, cutting Portland State’s lead to 67-65 with 3:32 left.
Brian Towne added 14 points for Portland State (6-5, 1-0).
Carl Holmes, a freshman from Eugene, Ore., led the Matadors with 14 points, and Jabari Simmons added 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Santa Clara 70, Belmont 44
Todd Wuschnig scored a season-high 16 points and Nathan Fast added 14 as the host Broncos (9-3) defeated the Bruins (3-9).
Brian Jones recorded a career-high 11 assists for the Broncos, four off the school record set by Steve Nash in December 1995 against Southern.

In Minneapolis, Brian Cardinal scored 22 points and the Boilermakers (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten) made 28 of 33 free throws while defeating the Golden Gophers (7-5, 0-1).
Minnesota hadn’t lost a Big Ten home opener since Jan. 7, 1988, a 65-61 defeat against Illinois.
