St. George’s Wins Showdown

Girls prep basketball

Selkirk looked primed to continue its hex on St. George’s when freshman Samantha Clarke took control Friday.

Clarke made five free throws in the final 3 minutes, guiding a 10-0 run that lifted the Dragons (7-2, 4-0) to a 54-40 win over the visiting Rangers (7-2, 3-1) in a game for the Panorama League South Division lead.

Clarke won the State A/B cross country meet two months ago.

Selkirk, which had won seven straight, defeated St. George’s three times last year, all by three points or less.

The Dragons’ Miranda Routh-Corker scored 22, including 8 of 9 from the line, and added 11 rebounds and seven steals.

Miranda Payne scored 34 on 15-of-23 shooting from the field, and added 13 rebounds as the Redskins (8-0, 5-0) defeated the visiting Hornets (4-4, 3-2).

Wellpinit’s Celeste Allen added seven assists and six steals, including five in the final quarter.

Wellpinit hit 14 of 20 free throws and shot 51 percent from the floor.

Young added 14 rebounds for Northport, which played its reserves in the fourth quarter.

Curlew’s Stephanie Brown scored 16 of her 23 in the fourth quarter.

In a championship rematch, the host Broncos (9-0, 4-0) won their 19th straight by holding the Wildcats (5-4, 3-1) to 2-of-9 shooting from the floor in the third quarter.

Ritzville made 18 of 39 from the floor, including 7 of 9 for Amy Fitch. The Broncos’ Shannon Russel hit two 3-pointers.

Ritzville won its last 10 games of 1996-97, including a State B title-game win over Wilbur-Creston.
