Shammond Williams scored 15 of his 24 points in the second half and No. 1 North Carolina held on to defeat one of its favorite foes with a 73-70 victory over No. 21 Clemson on Saturday in Clemson, S.C.

No one has pounded on the Tigers like the Tar Heels (15-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who hold a career mark of 103-15 against Clemson since the teams first met in 1926.

Greg Buckner scored 30 for Clemson (10-4, 1-1).

(2) Kansas 96, Nebraska 76

At Lawrence, Kan., Billy Thomas continued his scoring binge with 19 points and freshman Eric Chenowith matched him with a career-high 19 as the Jayhawks (17-2, 1-0) defeated the Cornhuskers (9-5, 0-1) in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

Tyronn Lue scored 18 points to lead Nebraska.

(3) Duke 104, (20) Maryland 72

At College Park, Md., Roshown McLeod scored 15 points in the first half as the Blue Devils (12-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) staged a phenomenal shooting show and went on to hand the Terrapins (7-5, 0-2) their most lopsided home loss in 29 seasons.

Duke led 61-39 at halftime after going 11 for 19 from 3-point range and making 16 of 17 foul shots.

(4) Utah 73, Rice 65

At Salt Lake City, Michael Doleac scored 20 points, including six in the final 5:28, as the Utes (12-0) stayed unbeaten with a win over the Owls (3-10).

Utah led 61-59 with 5:01 remaining before Doleac and Andre Miller each scored four points in a 12-3 run.

(6) Kentucky 71, Vanderbilt 62

At Lexington, Ky., Nazr Mohammed had 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Wildcats (12-2) topped the Commodores (11-3) in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Drew Maddux scored 16 points to lead Vanderbilt.

(10) UConn 84, Notre Dame 58

At Hartford, Conn., Richard Hamilton scored 23 points and the Huskies (13-1, 3-0 Big East) kept the Fighting Irish (7-4, 1-2) scoreless from the field for more than eight minutes en route to an easy victory.

Notre Dame’s Pat Garrity, who was limited by foul trouble, played only three minutes in the second half and finished with 15 points, seven under his average.

(12) New Mexico 92, Air Force 59

At Albuquerque, N.M., Kenny Thomas had 24 points and 10 rebounds and the Lobos (10-1, 1-0) came up with a season-high 14 steals in a win over the Falcons (6-3, 0-1) in a Western Athletic Conference opener.

St. Bonaventure 80, (13) Xavier 77

At Olean, N.Y., James Singleton scored a season-high 22 points and the Bonnies (10-3) held off a late rally by the Musketeers (8-3) in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams.

The Bonnies trailed only once in the game before completing one of its biggest upsets in years and winning its first conference opener since 1989.

At Iowa City, Iowa, freshman Ricky Davis scored 17 points and Guy Rucker had nine of his 14 during a decisive first-half run that sent the Hawkeyes (13-1, 2-0 Big Ten) to a victory over the Wildcats (6-4, 0-1).

Iowa shot 76 percent from the field in the second half, 65 percent for the game and made 15 of 20 3-point attempts.

(15) Florida St. 68, N.C. State 55

At Raleigh, N.C., Terrell Baker rebounded from a poor outing to score 22 points as the Seminoles (12-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame a 12-point first-half deficit to defeat the Wolfpack (9-3, 1-1).

C.C. Harrison led North Carolina State with 25 points.

(16) Ole Miss 73, (11) S. Carol. 54

At Oxford, Miss., Keith Carter scored 26 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Rebels (10-1) to a victory over the Gamecocks (8-2) in the conference opener for both of last season’s Southeastern Conference division champions.

South Carolina was led by Melvin Watson’s 15 points.

At Princeton, N.J., Mitch Henderson had 13 points and five assists and Manhattan scored just four points during the game’s first 11 minutes as the Tigers (11-1) rolled over the Jaspers (3-6).

(18) Michigan 92, Penn St. 75

At Ann Arbor, Mich., Robert Traylor scored a career-high 27 points as the Wolverines (12-3, 2-0 Big Ten) defeated the Nittany Lions (7-4, 0-1).

Maceo Baston added 17 points for Michigan.

(22) W.Virginia 79, Boston Coll. 57

At Morgantown, W.Va., Damian Owens scored 21 points and Adrian Pledger added 17 as the Mountaineers (12-2, 2-2 Big East) defeated the Eagles (8-6, 1-3).

(25) Marquette 71, Louisville 70

At Louisville, Ky., Brian Wardle’s 3-pointer with less than one second remaining lifted the Golden Eagles (10-0) over the Cardinals (5-7) in the Conference USA opener for both teams.

Haskins gets 700th win

At El Paso, Texas, Texas-El Paso gave coach Don Haskins his 700th career victory, a 66-64 win over Southern Methodist.

The winning points came on Jonathan Bomba’s tip-in at the buzzer.

Sharif Fajardo led UTEP (9-2, 1-0 WAC) with 23 points. Jay Poerner led SMU (10-1, 0-1) with 18.
