CV Gives Mead Double Trouble Perkes Helps Bears Scrape By Panthers

GSL boys

Tom Perkes has a long memory.

The Central Valley senior remembered three losses to Mead last year, two during the Greater Spokane League boys basketball season when he scored a total of 11 points.

He wiped out that disappointment Tuesday night by scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the sixth-ranked Bears’ 67-60 win at CV.

“Last year, they kind of ate us up, those big guys killed us,” the 6-foot-5 forward said. “Me and Marc (Hinckley), nothing was going to get inside. It was payback.”

A 10-2 surge by the Bears (5-1 overall, 4-1 GSL) to start the second half built the lead to 43-28. Guard Andy Stone brought the Panthers (4-3, 3-2) back, closing to 58-54 on his 3-pointer with 1:07 to play.

But Perkes and Hinckley, who had nine rebounds, grabbed some missed free throws when the Bears went cold at the line to secure the win.

Jeff Priebe started the run for the Bears. He put in a layup off a turnover and a pair of free throws after another Mead turnover for a 37-26 CV lead 13 seconds into the second half.

Nate Adams made a layin for the Panthers, but Ryan Smith countered with a bank shot and a layin before Perkes capped the run with a fast-break basket.

“They came out more aggressive than we did,” Mead coach Jim Preston said. “We made some turnovers, and they got a couple of baskets in transition and their big kids hit some nice shots.”

The Bears, who shoot just 58 percent from the line, made 11 of 12 free throws through three quarters for a 49-40 lead. They could have blown the game open if not for Stone, who had 14 of his 16 points in the second half, and a 12-of-21 performance at the line.

It was defense that made the difference, with Mead’s 6-8 Brian Wolverton scoring just one point before fouling out and 6-6 Tom Castillo getting eight.

“Most of our offense starts with our defense,” CV coach Rick Sloan said.

Perkes’ backup, Bryan Depew, had eight points, giving the Bears a big edge inside.

CV also had a 33-20 edge on the boards.

Priebe added 13 points, hitting a 3-pointer in a 9-0 run in the second quarter that gave the Bears a 26-17 lead.

CV stretched a 16-13 lead after one quarter to 31-23 at the half.

CV finished 23 of 33 at the line to 10 of 14 for Mead.

“I’m tired,” Perkes said. “That means it’s good, I left everything out there.”
