Darryl Strawberry, saying he’s in the best shape of his career, returned to the New York Yankees with a oneyear $850,000 contract.

Deion Sanders and Jose Rijo returned to the Cincinnati Reds, agreeing to minor-league contracts. Sanders, however, is not expected to play baseball next season. The deal calls for him to receive $5,000 per month.

A surgical team at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., removed most of a walnut-sized brain tumor from former Kansas City Royals pitcher Dan Quisenberry, and a neurosurgeon said the former relief ace might know next week whether the tumor was malignant.

San Diego Padres second baseman Quilvio Veras avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a $3.1 million, two-year contract.

Right-hander Tim Worrell and the Detroit Tigers agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract.
