Ferris Shows Lc Where The Spirit Is
GSL girls
Lewis and Clark coach Jim Redmon looks better in a tux than Art Rojas does in fake, horn-rimmed glasses and a red-and-white striped stocking cap.
Rojas doesn’t care.
“I’ll dress like a slob and take a win anytime,” the Ferris girls basketball coach said. “Or at least look like Waldo.”
Ferris used a general Waldo theme for the annual Rubber Chicken spirit game against Lewis and Clark, and Friday night at the Arena the Saxons found a win to go with the chicken.
With veterans Karie Pruett and Amy George combining for 40 points, Ferris won the Greater Spokane League game 48-33.
“When you’re younger, you’re more nervous,” said Pruett, who hit five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 21 points. “We just look to step it up more; we really wanted it. In my four years, we’re unbeaten in the game.”
George said, “Our experience kind of carried us. Some of the younger girls were more nervous.”
LC’s only lead was 2-0, then Pruett hit a 3 from the top and George had a three-point play, a 3-pointer from the right wing and two free throws.
The Tigers (3-5 overall, 3-3 GSL) hung in, trailing 29-27 with 3 minutes left in the third quarter when Ferris (6-2, 5-1) reeled off 13 consecutive points. LC was scoreless for 8:13 and committed nine of its 26 turnovers.
“I thought we were a little perimeter-happy in the first half; we tend to do that sometimes,” Rojas said. “We were lethargic on offense; we didn’t cut hard. LC fought hard in the second quarter and got back into it. That allowed me to do a little chewing.”
Jenny Benzel’s short shot from the right baseline that put Ferris up 24-20 was the first third-quarter points for the Saxons not scored by George, who had 14 in the first half and Ferris’ first three of the second half. Benzel added a 3-pointer late in the game-breaking run.
“In the second half, defensively we were a lot better and on offense we were a lot more crisp,” Rojas said.
It was the fifth straight game in double figures for George and she hopes the fans enjoyed the show.
“It’s fun to win with all those fans out there,” she said. “You show them how good you are and maybe they’ll get out to a few of our games.”
