Lc Bounds Past No. 2 Ferris Rebounding Key; ‘Chuck’ To Saxons

UNPUBLISHED CORRECTION: The name of football player Jeremey Williams is misspelled in this story. The correct spelling was confirmed by his mother.

The Lewis and Clark boys basketball team gathered in a hall deep inside the Arena on Friday night and someone mentioned that Chuck the Chicken was moving up the South Hill.

The Tigers didn’t even care about the prize South Hill rival Ferris won in the annual Rubber Chicken spirit competition. They were too busy enjoying a 52-43 basketball victory - a rare event in recent Greater Spokane League games - over the Saxons, the second-ranked 4A team in the state.

“Rebounding, that was the big thing,” LC coach Terry Reed said. “We had to block out to minimize their shots, because obviously they’re bigger.”

The Tigers (5-3 overall, 4-2 GSL) enjoyed a 36-24 edge on the boards in the game played before a rowdy crowd estimated at 6,000. LC got a big boost from 6-foot guard Luke Bowman, who had nine rebounds, six in the second half.

“We wanted that game so bad,” Bowman said. “We lost the last two; we wanted to stop the slide.”

The Tigers started a 15-1 run in the first quarter that gave them a 21-11 lead midway through the second quarter.

Tyrees Donastorg, another 6-footer, played a key part by grabbing five rebounds and helping keep the wide 6-4 Jeremy Williams from the boards.

“I was trying to get around him every time,” Donastorg said. “He is pretty big, but I did what I could do to help the team … when I fouled I would never give up.”

The Saxons (7-1, 5-1) recovered and were trailing 32-29 entering the fourth quarter when the Tigers sliced through the Ferris zone for three consecutive easy baskets.

The Saxons finally found Williams inside and he brought them back by making seven straight baskets and finishing with a career-high 17 points. However, he fouled out with just under 2 minutes left and the Saxons couldn’t hit enough from the outside to make a final charge.

LC, which only made 12 of 20 free throws, made eight in a row in the final 1:27 for the win.

“I told the team, ‘tonight the better team won,”’ Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “They were more efficient getting inside shots and getting us to foul. Early we were content to take outside shots and not get the ball inside. They just played better on defense and offense.”

Although Williams had a big game, no other Saxon was in double figures and leading scorer Chris Watts was held to one point.

Pat Luce led LC with 16 points and four other players had seven or eight.

Bowman, whose football season ended with a blown right knee, was one of those with eight. He is postponing surgery until after the season and the rest at Christmas break has him ready to go.

“I don’t even think about it anymore,” said Bowman, an all-league defensive back.

“That was his most minutes,” Reed said. “He provided leadership. Even though he doesn’t start, he was there at the end.”
