Idaho A.D. Jaynes Has Lot On Mind This Week
The next two days will be interesting for Idaho athletics and athletic director Oval Jaynes.
Idaho’s request for a waiver will be voted on today by nine Division I-A presidents at the NCAA Convention in Atlanta. Idaho, currently classified I-AA in football, is asking that its games count toward the bowl requirement of six I-A wins.
The waiver, good for three years, would ease some of Idaho’s scheduling and recruiting woes.
Meanwhile, Jaynes has been asked to interview Wednesday for the athletic director’s job at Tennessee-Chattanooga. He said he hasn’t accepted - yet - because he’s been concentrating on the NCAA meetings.
Jaynes talked with UTC chancellor Bill Stacy Monday and said he would let Stacy know his intentions today. An interview seems probable since Jaynes is only 100 miles from Chattanooga and expressed interest in UTC late last week.
“It is intriguing, but I’m happy at Idaho, too,” Jaynes said.
Donald punching in Worley
Heavyweight Larry Donald will headline a seven-bout professional boxing card Feb. 5 at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Bingo/Casino in Worley, Idaho.
Cincinnati’s Donald (30-1-1) will meet Lyle McDowell (20-5-1).
Donald’s resume includes wins over Tim Witherspoon and Bert Cooper. His only loss was to Riddick Bowe. McDowell, from Milwaukee, Wis., beat Trevor Berbick.
The co-feature pits Derrick Banks of Detroit and Al Williams, from Newport News, Va.
Spokane’s Para Draine will fight on the undercard.
Curry honored
Point guard Avery Curry, who scored 73 points to help Idaho to a 3-0 record last week, has been selected a co-Big West Conference men’s basketball player of the week.
Curry, who shares the honor with Boise State’s Roberto Bergersen, shot 27 of 42 from the field and 19 of 23 from the foul line.
Idaho (8-4 overall, 2-0 Big West) visits Cal State Fullerton on Thursday and UC Irvine on Saturday.
