In a dramatic reversal of the economic relationship between universities and high-profile football coaches, Joe Paterno of Penn State and his wife, Sue, have pledged $3.5 million to the school that has employed him since 1950.

The gift will fund scholarships, faculty positions and the construction of an interfaith spiritual center and a sports hall of fame on the University Park campus.
