Cruisin’ with other college grads

It’s not unusual for the alumni associations at colleges and universities to sponsor tours, and the Central Washington University Alumni Association is no exception.

The group will sponsor 16-day cruise/tours to Scandinavia and Russia this year, departing May 13 or 25, June 6, July 1 or Aug. 6. The tour price begins at $3,359 and includes air fare from New York, Miami or Washington, D.C., to Europe. For information, call the alumni office at (509) 963-2752.

Sit back and watch the hikers

Whether you have plans to travel in Nepal, or want to do your traveling to the Himalayas in an armchair, you can see the beauty of that region of the world at a slide-lecture Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at REI in Spokane.

Mike and Sally Poutiatine will show slides from their trekking and hiking experiences in Nepal and Tibet and will share anecdotes about their adventures. It’s free.

Lodging on the cheap

Nine hotels in Snohomish County have initiated a discount lodging program that runs through May 15. The hotels are in Lynnwood, Edmonds and Everett, north of Seattle and the program offers savings up to 40 percent on lodging.

For information and for a 32-page coupon booklet for Snohomish County that includes a calendar of events, call the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau, (888) 338-0976 or visit the Web site at www.snohomish.org.

The roads do change, you know

The 1998 Rand McNally Road Atlas is available with updated road maps (383 of them), city and state tourism directories and travel planning tips. In addition, the company has launched a Web site - www.randmcnally.com - which offers updates on road construction and address-to-address routing for $9.95.

Golf, Montana-style

Kudos to the Northern Pines Golf Club near Kalispell, Mont., which was recently picked by Golf Digest as the seventh best New Affordable Public Course.

The golf course is one of eight in the Flathead Valley, which makes it a popular golfer’s destination. The April 1997 issue of Golf Digest labeled the Flathead Valley “the last best place to golf.”

Spring on the island

The Empress Hotel in Victoria B.C., will host more than 45 wineries during the Victoria Symphony Society’s Pacific Northwest Wine Festival.

As the name implies, the wineries are all located in the Northwest.

The event runs Jan. 30-Feb. 1, and The Empress Secret Season Package is still in effect. Room rates begin at $149 (Canadian funds) and include breakfast for two and coupons for downtown Victoria businesses.

The seminars and tastings at the Wine Festival range from $15 to $50 (Canadian) and there will be a winemakers dinner at the Empress ($100 Canadian). For information, call The Empress at (250) 384-8111 or the Victoria Symphony office, (250) 385-6515.

A watch - and a ski pass, too

Now it’s possible to tell time and beat the ski-ticket lines, too. Swatch has a watch that can be programmed for a day’s, a week’s or a season’s worth of skiing: a simple swipe of the wrist at a turnstile allows the skier to pass right through.

The five U.S. resorts using the Swatch Access Skipass are Big Sky in Montana, Mount Bachelor in Oregon, Solitude in Utah, Snow Valley in California and Attitash in New Hampshire.
