Golfer’s Win Emotional
Eric Johnson shot a 3-under 67 Sunday to capture the Nike South Florida Classic on Sunday, capping an emotional week during which he learned his father has inoperable cancer.
Johnson, of Eugene, Ore., was 13-under (267) for the tournament and he finished two strokes ahead of rookie Chris Riley of Las Vegas.
Woody Austin, Tommy Armour III and Don Reese tied for third at 10-under.
It was the second Nike Tour championship for Johnson. The first came in the 1996 Knoxville Open. He earned a check of $40,500 for Sunday’s victory.
The week was bittersweet for Johnson, who learned his father has cancer in the lining of his lungs.
After he won, Johnson, 35, dropped to his knees for a few seconds.
