Dollar Tumbles Against Yen, Mark

The dollar fell sharply Wednesday against the Japanese yen and German mark as evidence grew of the widening U.S. fallout from Asia’s financial turmoil.

But the U.S. currency climbed to a 12-year high against the Canadian dollar on worries that the one-two punch of an eastern ice storm and Asia’s crisis would slow Canada’s economy.

The dollar has been in retreat from the 5-1/2-year highs it reached earlier this month against Japan’s currency, when it rose above 134 yen.

Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar tumbled to 1.4449 to the U.S. dollar, nearing a record low set in February 1986.
