Flyers Still Can’t Find Way To Beat Red Wings

Associated Press

The sweep continues for Detroit.

Brendan Shanahan’s goal with 3:12 remaining lifted the Red Wings to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, the team they defeated 4-0 in the Stanley Cup finals last spring.

The triumph snapped a two-game losing streak, Detroit’s longest of the season. It was the first time in the six games the Flyers have worn their black sweaters, new this season, that they have lost (3-1-2).

Shanahan, frustrated by Ron Hextall on several good chances earlier in the third period, slipped in behind defenseman Janne Niinimaa at the right side of the Flyers’ goal. That put him in perfect position to deflect Nicklas Lidstrom’s shot from the top of the left circle. It was Shanahan’s 21st goal.

It was a tight-checking defensive game all the way as Detroit outshot the Flyers 25-20.

Chris Osgood, notching his fifth shutout of the season and 19th of his career, had a big save on Niinimaa during a goalmouth scramble midway through the first period. Detroit’s Doug Brown hit the crossbar while Hextall was down with 2:25 left in the period.

Other games

In Denver, Darian Hatcher and Guy Carbonneau scored third-period goals as the Dallas Stars won their fourth straight game, defeating the Colorado Avalanche 3-2.

Grant Marshall set up Hatcher from behind the net to tie the game 2-2 at 7:46. Carbonneau beat Patrick Roy on a two-on-one break at 11:54 for the game-winner as the Stars completed the season series unbeaten, 3-0-1.

Ed Belfour stopped 18 shots in improving to 6-3-2 lifetime against the Avalanche. Roy made 37 saves as Colorado fell eight points behind the Stars for the best record in the Western Conference.

In New York, Bobby Holik scored his second goal of the game at 8:22 of the third period as the New Jersey Devils tied the Rangers 3-3 to extend their regular-season unbeaten streak against New York to seven games.

The Devils overcame a fine performance by Wayne Gretzky, who had a goal and two assists, and the Rangers’ recently potent power play to improve to 4-0-3 against New York since a 3-0 loss on Jan. 12, 1997.

In Anaheim, Calif., Steve Rucchin and Paul Kariya scored less than 2 minutes apart early in the third period and Guy Hebert made 38 saves as the Mighty Ducks rallied to tie the Los Angeles Kings 3-3.

Teemu Selanne scored his league-leading 36th goal - and 250th of his career - to help the Ducks extend their home unbeaten streak against their freeway foes to six games (4-0-2).

Craig Johnson and Glen Murray scored 26 seconds apart for the Kings late in first period for a 2-1 lead and Jozef Stumpel had a goal upheld by instant replay in the second period. But it wasn’t enough. The Kings entered the game with a 10-0 record in games they led after the first intermission.

Kariya pulled the Ducks even at 2:51 of the period with his 14th goal and 10th point in three games.
