Huskies Have No Defense For Winning Shot
Pac-10 men
Kris Weems was surprised to find himself without a defender as he launched his game-winning jump shot.
“I don’t know where my man was,” Weems said. “He must have been way behind me.”
Weems took an inbounds pass in the backcourt with 5.1 seconds left, dribbled untouched to the top of the key and hit a wide-open 3-pointer as time expired to give No. 5 Stanford a 74-72 victory over Washington in Seattle.
Teammate Pete Van Elswyk made sure that neither his man nor Washington’s Deon Luton, who was guarding Weems, had a chance to make a play.
“I got a good little screen,” Van Elswyk said. “I grabbed them both.”
Luton never knew what happened.
“As I moved toward him (Weems) I was bumped off,” Luton said.
Though Washington had two fouls to give, no one touched Weems as he made his way down court.
Donald Watts had hit a running 5-footer with 5.1 seconds left to give Washington a 72-71 lead.
Arthur Lee scored 17 points for Stanford (18-0, 7-0 Pac-10), while Weems and Tim Young each had 14 points. Young grabbed 12 rebounds and Lee dished out 10 assists.
The 18-game winning streak is the nation’s longest and a school record. Stanford and No. 4 Utah are the only undefeated teams in the country.
Watts led the Huskies (12-4, 5-2) with 21 points, while Luton and Jan Wooten each scored 12. Patrick Femerling had 10 rebounds.
Only 17 fouls were called and 12 free throws attempted as the referees let both teams play aggressive defense.
“We were fortunate to get that shot off when they had fouls to give,” Stanford coach Mike Montgomery said.
“We had a little confusion off the screen and consequently didn’t really even have anybody on Weems as he brought the ball up court,” Washington coach Bob Bender said.
“The initial plan was to foul but that didn’t happen,” Watts said.
Young, a 7-1 junior, had three blocks and became Stanford’s career leader in blocked shots with 122. He twisted an ankle in Thursday’s 82-72 win at Washington State and was expected to play sparingly.
Young dominated Todd MacCulloch, a 7-footer who is Washington’s leading scorer and rebounder. MacCulloch managed only five points and three rebounds Saturday.
