Roy Wegerle scored in the second minute to lead the United States soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Sweden in Orlando, Fla., in the first U.S. match of the year. Goaltender Brad Friedel earned the shutout.

The U.S. women’s team clinched the 1998 Guangzhou International Tournament in China, beating Norway 3-0 on goals by Tisha Venturini, Mia Hamm and Cindy Parlow. The United States finished the competition without allowing a goal in three games.
