Critics Of Mayor’s Planned Subdivision To Pack Hearing Neighbors Of Hayden Development Cite Housing Density, Other Problems
Hayden residents are expected to pack tonight’s hearing regarding the proposed Castlewood Court subdivision.
Neighbors think the development would have too many houses, among other problems. And they worry that their objections won’t be heard, because Castlewood is being proposed by Sperle Investments - which is owned by Mike Sperle, mayor of Hayden.
“Are city staff really free to comment on it, when Sperle has the power to hire and fire?,” asked Stephen McCrea, an attorney for the neighbors. “It may be perfectly legal, but it sure doesn’t look right.”
Sperle didn’t return a call Monday seeking comment.
When Sperle ran for office, he promised to excuse himself from votes on potential conflicts. And he did so at a Dec. 9 hearing on the subdivision, which was rescheduled because of complaints that all of the neighbors weren’t notified.
McCrea wants Sperle to go even further, and not speak on his company’s behalf at the hearing.
The mayor should let other company representatives speak, McCrea said.
Castlewood would be built between Strahorn Road and Finucane Drive. It would have 4.5 homes per acre, said Max Harrington, who lives in Finucane Estates.
His subdivision has 2.8 homes per acre, Harrington said, and nearby Circle Drive and Forest Hills each have 2 homes per acre.
“The city comprehensive plan … specifically mentions that the density of new developments should match the neighborhood,” he said.
Neighbors also are worried that plans call for only one entrance onto narrow Strahorn Road from the 56-home Castlewood Court.
“There are no provisions for a bicycle or a pedestrian path,” Harrington said. “We feel that’s very important for the safety of children and adults.”
Nearly 40 residents showed up at a meeting to discuss the proposal, Harrington said. “I have yet to meet anybody that’s in favor of it.”
Tonight’s hearing will start at 7 in Hayden City Hall, 8930 N. Government Way.
