Central Valley Dominates Bears Knock Saxons Out Of Gsl Lead
It could be a long time before anyone sees a Ferris boys basketball team look quite as bad as the Saxons did for two quarters Tuesday night.
Quite simply, eighth-ranked Central Valley put a case of ugly on the No. 4 Saxons at the Ferris gym.
The Bears battered Ferris 39-7 in the middle two quarters to roll to a 60-45 win that knocked the Saxons out of a three-way tie for the lead in the Greater Spokane League.
Lewis and Clark remained tied for the lead with a one-point win at North Central.
“They played very well,” veteran Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said. “They played solid defense, a lot of pressure. We had guys open but we couldn’t get them the ball out of the trap.”
The Bears (10-2 overall, 9-2 GSL) didn’t panic when they fell behind 17-10 in the first quarter. Ferris (10-3, 9-3) hit eight of 12 shots to three of 14 for CV.
“They shot real well, it’s their gym,” CV coach Rick Sloan said. “It took us the first quarter to get used to it. But they were good shots. In the second quarter we turned up the defense.”
It took about half the quarter for CV to warm up, and at 3:14 Tommy Servine scored Ferris’ only bucket for a 19-16 lead. The Bears closed with a 7-0 run to go up 23-19. A 10-2 run to open the third quarter got the lead in double figures and a 9-0 surge made it a 20-point bulge.
Facing CV’s relentless man-to-man half-court pressure, Ferris had to work hard and made just three of 15 shots in 16 minutes. And with CV sharing the load on offense, eventually the Saxons broke down on defense, allowing easy baskets. The Bears had just one turnover in the second half.
Offensively, the credit was spread around, although Jake Hebden had two 3-pointers and eight points in the third quarter.
“Once we get on defense and start making plays, I feel a lot more confident,” the 6-foot junior said. “Once we get into defense, things start happening.”
It was Hebden who teamed with senior Nate McFarlane to shut down Servine.
Though Servine finished with 18 points, he had seven in the first quarter with some amazing shooting and added eight in the fourth quarter when the Saxons cut the deficit to 10.
