Ferris Does Inside Job On CV Girls To Knock Bears Out Of First Place

Ferris found the parking zone.

Despite facing a zone defense, the Saxons scored 12 of their 20 baskets from basically layup range to knock No.3 Central Valley out of a tie with Mead for the Greater Spokane League lead in girls basketball with a 57-46 win at Ferris Tuesday night.

“I think us and CV have a grudge,” Ferris senior Kelly McCaffery said after matching her career high of 11 points. “I get pumped when we play a team that wants us as bad as we wanted them.”

The Saxons, led by McCaffery’s 7-of-8 shooting, also made 16 of 20 free throws, at least half coming after fouls on shots inside.

“Usually I don’t shoot that many; tonight was out of the norm,” McCaffery said. “But usually I make them in practice. I went to the basket harder than I usually do. I knew we had to go out there strong.”

Central Valley, on the other hand, struggled against Ferris’ man-to-man, which limited the Bears’ long-range bombers to two 3-pointers in a 15-of-52 shooting performance.

Rikki Jackson, who leads the GSL in scoring, had 11 points but was 0 for 8 in the second half, and Jenny Coyle, who had 17 points, needed 20 shots to get there.

The Bears (11-2 overall, 9-2 GSL) had won 10 straight after losing to Ferris (10-3, 9-2) 62-53 in the first round.

Ferris’ Amy George, who had 23 points in the first matchup, only had 13 Tuesday. But she had 19 rebounds, 13 in the second half, when CV had 14 as a team.
