It’s No Contest This Time Lake City Girls Easily Clinch Border Title
The showdown turned out to be a meltdown.
The Lake City High girls basketball team clinched the Border League championship with a torrid start and furious finish Tuesday as the Timberwolves dismantled Cheney 59-31 at LC.
Except for a few hiccups in between, LC displayed an intensity unlike any other game this season. And the rematch wasn’t anything like LC’s 58-55 comeback win in mid-December.
LC (19-0 overall, 15-0 in league) scored the first 17 points and led 19-1 before Cheney (11-5, 9-3) scored its first field goal.
But by late in the second quarter, Cheney had chewed a healthy chunk off the lead. A 6-foot jumper in the key by Anna Getz pulled the Blackhawks within 29-21 with 18 seconds left before halftime.
But Laura Dodge put the lead back into double digits (32-21) when she made a 3-pointer with 6 seconds remaining.
In the second half, particularly the final half of the fourth quarter, LC dominated.
“(In the second quarter) the coach got too excited,” said LC coach Dave Stockwell, who took the blame for the T-Wolves miscues. “I made the kids feel that every time they moved they made a mistake. All that in the second quarter was my fault. I think I made them look over their shoulders too much.”
So Stockwell apologized at halftime.
LC held Cheney to 10 points in the second half, and the T-Wolves outscored the Blackhawks 18-6 in the fourth period to pull away.
The Timberwolves defended well against Getz, the league’s leading scorer. She had 37 points in the first game when she made 8 of 12 3-pointers.
Getz scored a team-high 12 points Tuesday, but was 0 for 8 from 3-point range and 4 of 19 overall.
“With Cheney coming so close to us the last game, our kids were focused on really wanting to win this ballgame,” Stockwell said. “From here on out there’s a reason to win with every game. This was a good tuneup (for postseason).”
Dodge led LC with 19 points. Alison Asher, who made all six of her shots, had 12 and seven blocked shots, and Lindsay Herbert added 10 points.
Cheney coach Marty Jessett couldn’t explain his team’s start.
“We didn’t respond, we didn’t come out ready to play,” Jessett said. “They jumped on us and we played pretty tentative and passive.
“We controlled the tempo for three quarters the first time we played. But they dominated everything tonight.”
Cheney played without its second-leading scorer, Kara Wheitman, who sprained an ankle last week. She was in street clothes and was hobbling noticeably.
