Rain Halts Golf Tourney

Compiled From Wire Services

The Pacific Ocean became merely the largest among many water hazards as rain tormented the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in Pebble Beach, Calif., and threatened to wash out the tournament.

Rain and hail forced a 4-hour delay in the start of the tournament, reducing Thursday’s play to nine holes. The first round is set for completion today, with the second round Saturday.

If the weather cooperates, the third round will be played Sunday, and officials then will decide whether to end the tournament after 54 holes or play a fourth round on Monday.

Tom Lehman, Phil Mickelson and Tom Pernice each shot 32s after nine holes to take the early lead.

Defending champion Ian Woosnam shot a 66 for the opening-round lead in the Heineken Classic in Perth, Australia.

Jose Maria Olazabal birdied the final two holes to remain one stroke off the pace.
