From Staff

A Puyallup, Wash., man was killed Sunday in a two-car wreck on U.S. 2 west of Spokane, the Washington State Patrol reported.

Fred E. Wepfer, 73, was driving his 1995 Chrysler New Yorker east near Deep Creek when he crossed the center line into the path of a westbound 1995 Chevrolet pickup driven by former Eastern Washington University president Marshall Drummond, troopers said.

The cars hit head-on, and Wepfer died at the scene.

His wife, 73-year-old Vivian Wepfer, received spinal injuries and was taken to Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane.

Drummond, was cut and bruised in the wreck and also went to Deaconess.

Both Wepfers were wearing their seat belts. Troopers weren’t sure if Drummond was wearing his.
