Thorpe-Westwood Forms 19Th Council
The Spokane City Council is expected to approve the Thorpe-Westwood Neighborhood Council as the 19th organized neighborhood in the city.
Council action is scheduled for Monday’s meeting at City Hall.
Residents of the Thorpe-Westwood area of southwest Spokane formed the council after plans were announced to resurrect a large apartment project on Thorpe Road.
Developers from California want to put up 200 apartments known as the Canyon Bluffs development. The project eventually could have as many as 790 units.
A building permit for the apartments is pending at City Hall.
In the early 1990s, the neighborhood organized to fight the former Mission Springs development, a similar proposal for the same property.
Residents have been concerned about the effect so many new dwellings would have on traffic safety, fire protection and open spaces in the neighborhood.
The main access to the apartments would be through a pair of narrow old underpass tunnels on Thorpe Road just west of U.S. Highway 195. The tunnels go beneath two rail lines, one of which has been turned into a trail. The other is used for transcontinental rail service.
