Gambills Shocked

In one of the astounding moments in Spokane tennis history, ATP touring pro Jan-Michael Gambill of Colbert and his younger brother, Torrey, failed to make it past the semifinals of the Inland Empire Open Sunday at the Spokane Racquet Club.

Ryan Moran and Bill Wagstaff of Spokane ousted the top-seeded Gambills 6-4, 6-4 in the men’s doubles semifinals before falling to Don Ballew and Brian Hart in the finals. Ballew, from Yakima, and Hart, from Toppenish, Wash., triumphed 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-5.

Jan-Michael Gambill, with earnings of almost $200,000 on the men’s pro circuit this year, ranks 60th worldwide in singles.

Top-seeded Hart, who eliminated Moran in the semifinals, also won the men’s singles by defeating John Gruber of Ellensburg 6-1, 7-5.

Wagstaff, a longtime area standout, took the men’s 35 singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Randy Martin of Spokane.

Third-seeded Jean Rogers of Coeur d’Alene took home the women’s singles championship by defeating Megan McKitterick of Spokane 6-1, 6-4. Rogers and Iona Denney battled to a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 victory in the women’s doubles final.
