Planning to spend more time with his family, County Commissioner Shawn Logan has announced he will not seek re-election this fall. Logan, whose wife’s recent illness has put his priorities back on the home front, says he enjoyed the challenges posed by being commissioner.
FERRY COUNTY Coulee Dam
Trying to get a better grip on a growing gang problem, leaders from schools, police, cities and the Colville Tribes have been discussing a zero-tolerance policy. The groups are pledging to share information and enforce policies in combating gangs.
GRANT COUNTY Moses Lake
Those looking for a helping hand will be glad to know a battalion of volunteers is right in their own community. RSVP, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, has a long list of folks willing to give of their time and energy for a number of causes, including tutoring, community events, office work and light labor. The city has signed on to the Lincoln County recycling program. Outfitted with a large roll-off bin from the county, Wilbur has hired Ann Hansen to maintain the site at the west end of town. Items accepted include aluminum and tin cans, mixed paper, No. 2 plastic and glass.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Newport
Pend Oreille County Sheriff Doug Malby announced he will seek re-election in the fall. Malby says he’s prepared for a tumultuous campaign. Planning to run against Malby are Deputy Ron Froman, retired Los Angeles police officer Chris Johnson, and former Sheriff Tony Bamonte.
SPOKANE COUNTY Rockford
The town plans to purchase a 1980 dump truck from the city of Millwood for $7,500. It will replace a 1967 International truck. “We need something so if we need to go to town to get asphalt, we don’t need to worry about the lights working or the brakes going out,” said Mayor Mike Fuchs.
STEVENS COUNTY Chewelah
High country hikers, lace up your boots! An organized hiking tour of the Chewelah Cedar Trail in the Quartzite roadless area and Betts Meadow near Chewelah is set for Saturday. Mayor Mitchell D. Chandler declared today Gerald Lawson Day after the man who made Lawson Gardens possible. The public is invited to a public thank-you ceremony for Lawson on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the gardens. Lawson donated the property to the city in 1985 and money for park upkeep. In 1987 the park was opened and dedicated to Lawson’s first wife, Alice.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries
Assigning identification numbers for rural homes throughout Benewah County will resume next month. Harold Van Asche, a retired Shoshone County employee, has been hired to finish the project. St. Maries Valley Vista Care Center in St. Maries has its second annual Free Community Dinner Dance on Friday. Activities begin with a buffet-style barbecue at 5 p.m. The musical group Four On The Floor will perform at 6 p.m. Tours of the facility will be available. For information, call 245-4576.
BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint
The Bonner County commissioners have authorized creation of the Selkirk Recreation District in order to repair mountain roads. Schweitzer Mountain Property Owners will have an election Aug. 8 to decide whether to form a new taxing district to pay for repairs. Sandpoint The Idaho Transportation Department plans to activate traffic signals Friday on Division and Boyer Avenues. The traffic signal project, along with a few other highway projects, should improve traffic flow on U.S. Highway 95.
BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry
The Chamber of Commerce is holding a special meeting July 23 at 7 p.m. to discuss the departure of the J.C. Penney store and ideas to bring another store into the area. Options to beautify downtown Bonners Ferry also will be discussed, according to chamber president Carl Hendricks. The public is invited.

Severe weather fluctuations resulted in major losses for local farmers in Boundary County this year. Despite fairly decent crops, prices will force many farmers out of business, according to extension agent Dave Wattenbarger.
KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene
Close to 200 road hogs will roar into Coeur d’Alene Sunday for a 200-mile motorcycle ride around the lake benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The ride begins at the Albertson’s in Ironwood Square at 10 a.m., goes south on U.S. Highway 95 to St. Maries, takes the White Pine Scenic Route along Highway 97, and returns by Interstate 90 to the Hot Rod Cafe by 3 p.m. Cost to participate is $10 per person. A 6-year-old Kellogg girl hopes to donate her two extra kidneys to an Idaho child in what would be a 10-hour surgical procedure at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. Technicians at Kootenai Medical Center located Beth Jepsen’s multiple organs after performing an ultrasound and dye test when she came down with a fever of almost 105 degrees.
