Yen, Mark Gain On Dollar
The dollar fell against the yen Thursday on news that a reform-minded candidate had emerged in Japan to succeed Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto.
The yen gained strength from the news that Seiroku Kajiyama, a vociferous critic of Hashimoto’s economic policies and an advocate of tax cuts to stimulate Japan’s economy, would step forward as a candidate for prime minister.
The dollar also fell against the mark on news that Russia had approved an essential element of President Boris Yeltsin’s austerity plan.
