ADAMS COUNTY Benge
Residents in southeastern Adams County are asked to stay alert because a cougar has been sighted in the area. Reports from Marengo, Lamont, Winona and Benge have been phoned into the Adams County Sheriff’s Department in the past week. Sheriff Mike Kline says several dogs have been reported missing. Kline suggests those spotting the animal call his department immediately.
FERRY COUNTY Inchelium
With Carl and Florence Putnam leading the parade, the annual Inchelium Days celebration includes a craft and bargain fair, 3-on-3 basketball tourney, horseshoe pitch, parade and fun run.
GRANT COUNTY Wilson Creek
Recycling has paid off for students at Wilson Creek School. After receiving $2,500 for having the state’s best school-based recycling program, the ag science club that runs the program plans to use the money for leadership programs and activities.
LINCOLN COUNTY Davenport
Davenport’s annual Pioneer Days celebration begins today with a parade, classic car show, 3-on-3 hoop shoot, horseshoe tourney, barbecue, and free entertainment in the park. On Sunday, look for the Lincoln 4-Wheelers’ Mud Bog north of town on Highway 25. For more information, call 725-0101.
PEND OREILLE COUNTY Usk
Hoping to meet the needs of local residents as well as fish, Pend Oreille County has received a grant from the Washington Department of Ecology. The $47,706 grant was awarded to organize a watershed planning unit. Reducing water pollution and protecting fish habitat will be primary goals.
SPOKANE COUNTY Deer Park
Marine Pfc. Anthony W. Wilson, son of Brad and Sue R. Collier of 36511 N. Pike Road, recently completed the motor vehicle operator course at Marine Corps Detachment, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Wilson joined the Marine Corps in 1997.
STEVENS COUNTY Springdale
Rope yourself some fun at the annual Springdale Frontier Days celebration today and Sunday. The festivities get under way with a parade, followed by a barbecue and rodeo. Rodeo finals will be held Sunday, with winners receiving a prized George Flett trophy buckle. Events include saddle bronc, bareback, calf roping, bull-dogging and bull riding.
WHITMAN COUNTY Palouse
Annie Pillers has been selected as the Palouse city clerk. She resigned from the City Council to take the position, which she had previously held for four years. In other Palouse city news, the council approved annual six-year road goals, with updates planned for state routes 272 and 27.

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries
The federal government has proposed to pay more than $1.5 million for an easement to leave water on Clara Hepton’s 1,100 acres of St. Maries farmland, turning it into a wetland.
BONNER COUNTY Priest River
Bonner County School Board trustees voted to continue a drug testing program for high school athletes for another year. The board also requested superintendent Roy Rummler to move ahead with making the drug-testing program effective across the entire district.
BOUNDARY COUNTY Bonners Ferry
The City Council has announced that it will reverse an earlier decision that banned permits for any single-wide mobile homes in the city. That action complies with Idaho legislation permitting the installation of mobile homes in single-family residential areas.
KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene
Associate Pastor George A. Rassley will celebrate 50 years of priesthood following a mass Sunday at St. Thomas Catholic Church on Indiana Avenue. Rassley has been a pastor at the church for nearly nine years after moving into the area in 1990.
LATAH COUNTY Potlatch
The Potlatch annual sawing competition is today at 12:30 p.m. in the Lion’s Club park, following a 10 a.m. parade. Contestants will compete with antique and cross-cut saws, in ax throwing and in caber throwing. In the “bed and boot,” event the male and female contestants must leap out of a bed when the alarm goes off, put on boots and hard-hat, push a wheelbarrow to a piece of wood, saw through it and push the wheelbarrow back to the finish line.
Bovill
Bovill’s Old Timer’s Days festivities begin today with a Jack and Jill softball tournament at 8 a.m. and a parade at 1 p.m. The chug-a-lug contest begins at 5 p.m. at Bailey’s Bar.
