Wenatchee National Forest

The Wenatchee National Forest has recommended helicopter logging in a roadless area popular with hikers and mountain bikers.

The 25,000-acre Devils Gulch roadless area, about 10 miles from Wenatchee, includes sandstone hills shaded by scattered ponderosa pines. “Devils Gulch is the best backcountry mountain bike ride in Washington state,” said Pat Rasmussen of the Leavenworth Audubon Adopt-a-Forest program.

“There are few wilderness areas where they can have a challenging wildland experience and Devils Gulch is the best.”

The Leavenworth Ranger District has proposed helicopter logging on about 3,517 acres, including 912 acres within the roadless area. The plan calls for 7.6 miles of road.

Devils Gulch Roadless Area has never been logged.
