Error Opens Floodgates As Indians Lose Everett Gains Six Unearned Runs In 12-4 Triumph Over Spokane
A disastrous third inning did in the Spokane Indians on Sunday.
The Everett AquaSox tallied six unearned runs against Spokane starter Cary Ammons in that inning and cruised to a 12-4 Northwest League victory.
The Indians missed an opportunity to gain ground on the front-running Boise Hawks, who fell to the Yakima Bears 11-10, despite scoring eight runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Ammons, who had won his first two decisions, breezed through the first two innings without allowing a hit.
Everett’s Carlos Maldonado drew a two-out walk in the third and Trey Parker reached base on an error by third baseman Ben Slemmer.
That opened the floodgates.
Jake Weber singled in a pair of runs. Rick Southall added an RBI single and Craig Kuzmic capped the rally with a three-run home run.
Maldonado stretched the lead to 7-0 with a solo home run off Ammons in the fourth.
Francisco Bautista took the mound for Spokane in the fifth inning and failed to register an out. He walked four straight batters before giving way to Mike Casper. Maldonado’s run-scoring single and Domingo Pacheco’s bases-loaded walk made it 10-0 for Everett.
Jeremy Dodson got Spokane on the board in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI single that scored Pedro Herrera. Rico Montas added an RBI groundout to make it 10-2.
The Indians scored twice more in the eighth on Danny DiPace’s solo home run and Slemmer’s RBI single.
