WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY Othello

Eight University of Washington health science students will get a lesson in rural medicine this week. The students will work a booth at the Columbia Basin Health Care Fair on Thursday to provide information on where migrant workers can obtain medical help. Prenatal care, water quality and tooth care also will be discussed. The students also will visit migrant worker communities to distribute clothing and supplies donated by UW students and corporate sponsors.

FERRY COUNTY Republic

Councilman Jack McManigal is resigning and moving to Coulee Dam. The town of Republic is looking for interested citizens who would like to step up to the plate. If you would like to fill the vacant council seat, write a letter to Republic City Hall, Box 331, Republic, WA 99166.

GRANT COUNTY Electric City

The ball is rolling at Banks Lake Golf and Country Club as members voted to add a back nine to the popular Columbia Basin course. A true believer in the project, club board member Dan Thomas, is loaning $300,000 to build the links and promises the club need not repay the loan until the additional holes begin bringing in revenue through “new members and more play.”

LINCOLN COUNTY Reardan

Drug testing for athletes at Reardan High School is on the agenda for tonight’s school board meeting. Drug testing was originally suggested by some students. Now the debate is focused on financial costs and student rights. Discussion starts at 7 p.m. in the high school library.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY Usk

If the Kalispel Tribe has its way, the fishing will be fantastic. Hoping to produce around 150,000 largemouth bass annually, the tribe has launched its new fish hatchery on the Pend Oreille River. Using brood stock from the river itself, hatchery personnel are monitoring the water temperature carefully as a range of 68 to 75 degrees is needed for spawning.

SPOKANE COUNTY Cheney

Steve Worthington, community development director for the city of Cheney, is leaving for a job in Fife, east of Tacoma. He spent 12 years in Cheney. Fife is smaller than Cheney, but is growing at a faster rate.

STEVENS COUNTY Kettle Falls

The Lake Roosevelt Forum will hold its quarterly meeting Wednesday at Donny’s Restaurant on Highway 395. The Forum will discuss any new information available on water-quality issues affecting the lake and its watershed.

WHITMAN COUNTY Colfax

The entry deadline for the Palouse Empire Fair talent show is Monday. The talent show is scheduled Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. on the Outdoor Stage. There will be cash prizes in every category. Call (509) 397-6263 for more information.

IDAHO

BENEWAH COUNTY St. Maries

A water proposal by local businessman Duane Clement has been denied by the City Council after a decision to continue developing a well on property east of St. Maries was made. Clement proposed the city use his well in order to override an ordinance that requires he hook into the city’s water system.

BONNER COUNTY Sandpoint

Local Sandpoint artist Bob Lindemann will unveil his artwork for the 1998 Festival at Sandpoint from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at The Power House Restaurant & Bar. Autographed copies of the 1998 poster will be available. For more information, call 265-4554.

Priest River

Don Pettit has been selected by the Priest River Chamber of Commerce as the 1998 Bull of the Woods for the Timber Days celebration Friday and Saturday.

Sandpoint

The Panida Theatre is looking to fill the positions of five board members. Board members meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month to facilitate the business of the nonprofit organization and its various committees. Applications are available at the Panida. KOOTENAI COUNTY Coeur d’Alene

LATAH COUNTY Moscow

There are still limited spaces open for the July 29-31 Chinese mining workshop on the lower Salmon River. Students will study the economic and cultural contributions of Idaho’s early Chinese residents. Cost for the class is $469, which includes transportation, meals, licensed guides and tent accommodation. The Kellogg Board of Trustees has appointed Carol Murray as Title IX director for the 1998-99 school year. Terry Rinaldi was appointed as clerk/treasurer and Brad Corkill was re-elected chairman.
