Vandals Force Pool To Be Closed

From Staff Reports

The swimming pool at Spokane’s Comstock Park, which reopened Sunday after a contamination scare, was closed again Monday when lifeguards found broken glass in the water, parks officials said.

But workers cleaned up the glass in time for the late morning swim lessons, and the popular South Hill pool is expected to be open today, officials said.

The city closed the pool about 2 p.m. Friday when a water sample tested positive for coliform bacteria and rumors spread there also was E. coli in it.

Such bacteria get into the water through fecal matter.

Parks officials treated the water with extra chlorine Saturday and reopened the pool Sunday after it tested clean.

Monday morning, workers discovered that vandals had thrown broken glass in and around the pool. City officials were forced to cancel swimming for a few hours until the glass could be cleaned up.
