WASHINGTON

ADAMS COUNTY

Ritzville

Two, count ‘em, two Ritzville residents did the near impossible recently by nailing the ever-elusive hole-in-one. Using a driver on the eighth hole at Ritzville Municipal Golf Course, Matt Schwisow topped a 333-yard drive with a clink in the cup. Following his lead, but at the Deer Park Golf Club, Chris Barker sank a hole-in-one at the State Junior Golf Tournament. Driving the ball 127 yards on the eighth hole, Barker used a pitching wedge.

FERRY COUNTY

Republic

Directors of the Colville National Forest have signed a management plan to thin and burn smaller trees. Looking at 5,000 acres 15 miles northwest of Republic, the plan includes thinning harvests, road management and prescribed burns. To lessen the impact of forest fires, the burning and cutting of smaller trees will keep flames closer to the ground, giving larger trees a chance to survive a fire.

GRANT COUNTY

Quincy

George, Mountain View and Pioneer elementary schools are looking for folks to join AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps members are trained in tutoring, lesson planning, career development, leadership, life skills and conflict resolution. Members receive a $700 monthly allowance, health care benefits, child care subsidy and a $4,725 education award. For further information, call 682-4550.

Davenport

Residents can get free health information today. The Lincoln County Public Health Coalition is holding an open house from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. complete with blood-pressure checks, nutrition and women’s health information, drawings and refreshments. The Tuesday evening immunization clinic will still be available. LCPHC is located at 90 Nichols St., adjacent to Lincoln Hospital.

PEND OREILLE COUNTY

Ione

With the resignation of seven-year veteran Dave Weaver, the Selkirk School Board is seeking applications from interested citizens to fill his post. Weaver represented people inside the city limits of Ione and between Smackout Pass Road and Box Canyon, west of Highway 31.

SPOKANE COUNTY

Fairfield

Majoring in agricultural education, Nathaniel A. Hahner has earned a $1,000 Wittenback Memorial Scholarship from the WSU College of Agriculture and Home Economics. Hahner, preparing to start his sophomore year, is the son of Timothy and Judith Hahner of Fairfield and a 1998 graduate of Liberty High School.

STEVENS COUNTY

Sullivan Creek

Strike it rich at Sullivan Lake as the Colville Recreation Department gives would-be miners tips on panning for gold. On the calendar for Aug. 29 and Sept. 12, this field trip is designed for kids 15 and up. Participants also will be taken to a quarry where they can dig for fossils. Instructor Jeff Tetrick says any treasure found can be taken home.

WHITMAN COUNTY

St. John

In his return to Whitman County, Bill Edwards has accepted the position of superintendent at the St. John-Endicott School District. Born and raised in Tekoa, Edwards has come back to the Palouse via Toutle Lake, Wash. A 12-year veteran superintendent, he replaces Tim McCarthy, who accepted a position at the Hoquiam School District on the West Side.

St. Maries

GTE customers in Tensed and Farmington will be able to call St. Maries, Potlatch, Plummer and Worley without long-distance charges starting Aug. 24. Priest River

The City of Priest River has hired Joel Saccomanno to fill the vacancy on the city police force. He replaces Bill Bitton, who took a position in Colville. Saccomanno has worked for the Bonner County Sheriff’s Department for the last two years.

BOUNDARY COUNTY

Bonners Ferry

Friends and community members of country musician Chuck West have planned a benefit at noon Sunday, at the Crossroads Bar. West settled in the area in the early 1980s and opened Ace Mobile Home Service along with playing country music on the weekends. He recently underwent abdominal surgery for a malignant growth. The surgery was successful and he has returned home, but friends say he has high medical bills.

Steven A. Johnsen, a senior majoring in molecular biology/biochemistry, is the 1997-1998 recipient of the Idaho Academy of Science Scholarship.

Shoshone County Fire District recently bought a new set of “jaws of life” to upgrade its rescue abilities, said District II Chief Dale Costa.
