Dollar Falls Against Yen, Mark

The dollar fell against other major currencies Tuesday as Japan appeared closer to getting a new finance minister and U.S. stocks dropped sharply.

The dollar moved lower against the Japanese yen and German mark in early trading after the Kyodo News agency reported that former Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa was expected to accept Foreign Minister Keizo Obuchi’s request to serve as finance minister.

Reports that he was having trouble finding a new finance minister had boosted the dollar against the yen on Monday.
