BFGoodrich, which announced plans last month to build a $66 million carbon brake disk plant west of Spokane, is now accepting applications for furnace operators and maintenance mechanics.

The company plans to break ground at its site near the Medical Lake interchange on I-90 in September and start production by February. It plans to hire 18 people this summer, and employ 250 by 2003.

Following news of BFGoodrich’s plans, Bruce Westfahl of the Washington State Employment Security Department said he received an estimated 700 phone calls from interested job seekers.

The positions require 12 weeks of training in either Santa Fe Springs, Calif., or Pueblo, Colo. Applicants must have experience in forming and fabricating parts, plus good mechanical and communication skills.

Applications are available at the Washington State Employment Security Department, 130 S. Arthur. A short film describes the carbon brake process.

“These skilled positions are an excellent fit for Spokane’s work force,” said Mark Turner, president of Spokane’s Economic Development Council.
